series it makes it the 57-2 0r 57-4 and so on. Most of it it is all in the shooter's mind. Just like the JM proof mark on the Marlin rifles. Some people tell everyone they know that their rifle is better than others because they have the JM proof mark on it. It is all BS. The new Ruger made Marlins won't have the JM proof mark on them and some morons will be saying they are not as good as the older Marlins with the JM stamp. People will not admit to having a gun that is not as good as their neighbors so they use the JM stamp to claim that their gun is better than the other guy's gun. The dash and number on the S&Ws is the same thing. All in the mind of the owner of the gun. Personally I like seeing the dash and a number as that usually means S&W has found a problem and has revised the gun to take care of that problem.
