I ran Hereford mixed cows for years.

We had a German Gelbvieh bull that worked really well. Did not have to pull calves and they grew really well. The Gelbvieh's do well in really cold weather.

In later years my partner had a heart attack and quit working cows. I ended up selling the herd but we would buy 2 or 3 calves in the Spring, raise them on grass all summer and just before Winter we would sell two and butcher one for ourselves.

We were able to do that and stay ahead on the cash flow for quite a few years. Then we moved to Mozambique and started raising goats!
