trying to keep the water out. The houses in the first couple of pics were probably 3 to 4 feet lower than the road and they tried everything to keep the water back but it didn't help.

the water got under the asphalt and buckled the road up. They had to bring heavy machinery in to remove the mess.

they tried to dig deep ditches at the base of the hill so the rain coming down the hillside wouldn't go any further. This flopped as the ditch just caused the runoff across the road to be more mud than rain.
