Great and wonderful Christmas story!

It was very special you were able to re-connect with him so many years later. What a blessing.

I see in the background you guys qualified with M-14's. I have a Federal Ordinance that is a "real" M-14 with no selector. The fiberglass GI stock has the cut-out for the selector but no parts. It is a pretty nice gun in my opinion. I have a M1 Garand too but they are almost like night and day. For combat I'd much prefer a box mag. Another 7.62 I own is a L1A1, how interesting to compare them all. I was not overwhelmed with the HK G3 so I sold it. It tore the crap out of my brass. Stripes longitudinal, flattened the mouths, and generally battered them.

I can't imagine what positive use a full auto feature might be on any of them.

A friend I worked with told me many stories of Korea. They were issued .30 M2 Carbines. One story he told was a young teen hooch boy gone rogue. He was asleep in a bunk during the day and he awoke to see the boy with a M2 with fixed bayonet going from bunk to bunk raising the light blocking covers to see if anyone was in them. When he got to my friend he lunged and grabbed the bayonet, fighting the muzzle away from covering his body. Without firing the boy ran outside, still in possession of the gun. My friend in hot pursuit, moments later. The boy opened up with the .30 Carbine and dumped a entire mag., somehow missing him completely. He sure thought he was dead on the spot. Carl said some Marines took over the situation with some finality.
