As mentioned some time ago I had a Trap shooting networking event for work. It was a beautiful crisp day and getting paid to go shoot anything is fantastic! The BBQ meal was not bad either. The event was held at the Jacksonville Shooting Center and sponsored by several Engineering firms. A grand time even though my performance was not to my liking.
Anyone that has met me for 30 seconds knows I have some vision issues. I do not have stereo vision as normal, and I'm cross-eye dominant. So I have some challenges for shotgunning techniques. I can't shoot with both eyes open, I have to aim like a rifle. I think that is causing me issues. I made many mistakes but learned a lot.
The little Std. 1100 20 bore performed great. I had not seen it for a few years but in the back of the safe it was rust free. Some kindness with some Kroil had it slicker than new in the early 1970's. 1100's need the o-ring and gas ring to be clean and able to move freely, that's about it. It sports a 28" vent rib barrel with fixed full choke. I bought it for my father back in the 1980's. Man it demands I hold it really tight on a bird. I need to pattern it but I think it shoots really tight. Some Remingtons had questionable barrel boring but I think that came later. The 20 has just a few less pellets than the 12 with target #8's but the shot string is longer I think. Maybe it does make a difference. The 12's seemed to hit everything more clean from my observation. At least half of my birds I managed to hit were not "smoked" but more than not clipped but counted.
We had a blast though and I hope to be invited next year. I flinched, shot in front of, behind, early, late, you name it. My final score from two rounds was 21/50. Dismal, but fun. I can do better next time. We all shot from the close position and rotated after five from each station. I did not know there were so many variations and even doubles in Trap! It's an interesting game.
Guy at bottom is my brother in law Jimmy. He is a MUCH better shot than me. Using his pet 1100 12 with a 28" modified choke, he only did 26/50 though. It made me feel a little better.
