I had a mind to put together a period (sort of) longer range .30-30 from Doug’s old M64. Just for fun and some experimental cast bullet shooting. If you are interested Google “Jim Taylor .30-30” for some very interesting reading. My eyes are not so good, and I figured an old fine crosshair K4 Weaver couldn’t hurt. I do not want to modify the gun, but they used to make goofy side mounts that are interesting. Weaver makes (or used to) a #3A-C-D side mount for the M94 Winchesters. The A mount must be drilled and tapped four screws into the side receiver, blasphemy. The C mount fits a post-94 with simply replacing the screws with Weaver provided ones. The D mount is actually the same as the C but the” Finger Lever Pin Stop” replacement screw for the receiver base is a different thread pitch.

I figured this out after ordering a C model base set. For some special but useless knowledge to retain I found the following. The Pre-64 Winchester M94 screw is a 11-32 pitch (0.197” OD) that is long obsolete. Post M94’s use a now common 12-32 (0.216”) pitch thread with bigger diameter head. Both receiver screws can be found today as standard Winchester produced parts. The Special Screw for the Weaver base is another matter. It pinches the base up to the receiver at the forward portion as a third point of contact. The rear two screws, where a receiver sight would mount, fit both pre-and post M94’s just fine.

So, It holds pretty well. I can also temporarily adhere the base to the receiver where it will work. I need to sneak up on someone or someplace that has an old stock #3D weaver base with the proper pre-64 magic screw. You know there is one lying in an old cigar box in a pile of long forgotten gunshow fodder someplace. But where and how would anyone know what it even is?!!
