I used .45 Colt brass for quite a long time.

We couldn't get 454 brass in the early days. I continued using it for .45 Colt loads even later on. I took a 454 brass and belled the mouth of the case and sharpened the edges with a 45 degree bevel cutter. Then I would push that into the chambers and 'cut' out any builtup carbon deposits. After that just clean with a brass brush.
