Well we had the .22 Winchester Auto in 1903

made especially for the M1903 Winchester semi-auto .22. That should have been the end of it. An inside lubricated .22 bullet the same length as the .22 LR. It made the new semi-auto shoot clean. They even made a longer version called the .22 WRF way back in 1890, sort of an early almost .22 Magnum. They just shortened it to fit the new Winchester repeater. You can still find arms in both calibers and I've even shot .22 WRF in .22 WMR. Sort of a standard velocity 45 gr. version.

Alas, this effort is going the totally opposite direction. They mad the bullet fit inside the existing .22 LR heeled bullet case by reducing the diameter to the heel specs. Really all it was is a new barrel to adapt the guns. So it will be interesting to see it's reception.
