With color coding their shot shells. The true possibility, hopefully a rare concern, of a 20 ga. Being dropped into a 12 ga., than a 12 ga. round being loaded and fired!

Their solution was to make 12 ga. -red, 16 ga. -purple, and 20 ga.-yellow. I remember .410 being red, black, or green of varied makers. But being “67 gauge” there is little chance of confusing it. Today most makers seem to have standardized 20 ga. as yellow. But it was originally Federal’s marketing idea.

Those little cardboard boxes of .22 rounds sure do conjure memories.
