However I was an impressionable kid at ground zero when that award started. Elmer Keith was the first recipient. It was exciting awaiting the magazines to see who was going to get the award each year. It meant something, they really deserved it for being an ambassador. These were the big bronze statues. I think the small plastic ones were for nominees.
I think Gary told me John Taffin or maybe Lee himself gave them to GNR. With the provision they remained treasured curios, not actual merit awards in the handgun field. The program had been shut down in 1999. It had lost savor, too political. So Lee stopped it.
We have some very rare and treasured mementos to pass on to heirs.
