One thing a check does is provide a terrific uniform base which enhances accuracy. It also is basically a very, very short bullet jacket if you want to think of it that way. This helps the bullet take the rifling and spin with the bore as it is pushed under pressure. Even with a check if pushed faster than the alloy can take the rifling it will strip along and lead. It's pressure, over time, and what the actual alloy can manage as it's pushed.

The coating is basically modern paint that bakes to a rigid shell making a very thin jacketed coating bonded to the lead. It does a great job preventing lead vapors for indoor shooting and handling the bullets. It also takes the place of lubrication, for the most part. I've just played wiht it a little and it's fun. Something new to toy, but it is useful. Less messy, sort of. LOL.
