were from the very early Springfield days and the initial .22 Hornets from .22 WCF. (and the .22 Jet S&W revolvers) The M43 dates early post war. I have read they often have headspace issues with hot loads which may suggest the reason for the barrel oddity. They say it can set the bolt back. FYI. No reason though for losing 3" though.

I bet the twist is goofy slow compared to what we use in .22 today.
