bought some Hampster bedding that was corn cob and used it. The granules were too big and hard to get out of cases. Like Jim said about anything will work, rice too. Some of these boys are using shards of stainless steel even, sure to eventually ruin your plastic vibratory cleaner.
The commercial stuff is not cheap but lasts a very long time. They have selected it to be a better fit than some rigged up media.
