brass/bronze or copper wool, not steel is great for removing rust. I think it is what Gary said. I have used it myself. I have also used 0000 steel wool but it requires so much finesse not to remove the finish around the effected area I'd hesitate to recommend it. It truly is a skill.
The brass/copper will leave a color but it wipes off.
