But the couple I have shot, and mostly the Hornady 200 gr. JSP of a more conventional design, are very tough jacketed. If you do not hit bone you may not get as much expansion as you'd think. Penetration is fantastic though. I was shooting them at 2600 fps muzzle velocity and at 100-200 yds on smaller species they just zipped right through with finger sized exit holes.

This experience was very limited but it would be a good idea to do some testing for yourself. I'd think the Accubond to be even more robustly jacketed. It was my next bullet to be tested. Perhaps the old Partition would fare better with it's softer nose? I'd sure try to find a bullet designed for something besides the .338 Lapua or .338-378 Wby.

Between friends we had a little running rivalry between the 8mm GNR and .338 GNR. I have to admit if normal medium game are your primary use (it performed great on 2 AK Black Bears that I witnessed) the 8mm has an edge in lighter bullets and some bullets literally designed for the handgun obtainable speeds. If I wanted something for really bigger game then the .338 cal. probably has a little edge with real heavy bullet construction.
