I was about 15 at the time and we went to Worthings Hardware in Staunton. The store is still there today but it is mostly antiques.

I shot my first deer in Highland County with that shotgun using a slug. I sold it sometime in the late 60's.

While we shot squirrels and rabbits at the time, pigeons were our trophies of the day. We had a regular circuit of the farmers in the area. They ate lots of grain and the farmers wanted them gone. We always left a little stock for next years shooting.

We tried to give some of them to the farmer but most thought of them as city pigeons meaning dirty. We just skinned them and cut out the breast meat. They were good eating. My mother sometimes used a pressure cooker and made stew.
