wait 30 minutes after the shot before I move in. I have not found that to work for me. If I hit the animal and wound him and he is up and moving, he can cover a lot of territory in 30 minutes. If he hits the ground at the first shot and starts to get up I hit him again and again until he stays down. Then as I walk up on him I look for his eyes. If they are closed, shoot him again as he is still alive. They always die with their eyes open. I have been lucky thru the years by going by these little self set rules and I have not lost an animal yet. Before I started doing this I had to do a lot of tracking and spent hours trying to find the wounded deer, bear or whatever. Also by the time you find him the meat is tainted due to the animal pumping the Adrenalin thru his system. A bullet or two is cheap insurance as far as I am concerned.
