it was called "Full Contact Shooting". Basically you press the barrel against the target and shoot. Not many think of it but pressing a semi-auto against anything usually can and will take it out of battery where it will NOT shoot. It unlocks the barrel/action and prevents the sear from releasing.
They were trained to place the thumb against the back of the slide holding it forward while they fire! I've been cut and had my nose mashed as a child with slide travel. You'd think it would take your thumb off. Not so, you can easily hold a 9mm closed with your thumb and fire it. So my buddy says!
It opens up some interesting questions. I also read of a fellow shooting a 1911 with NO RECOIL SPRING at all! He was a Gunsmith testing things. Egads! The main thing the recoil spring does is hold the barrel up in battery, locking the lugs with the slide, and powers the slide return. It has to contribute to slowing slide travel/speed but to what degree? I mean that is my current beef, I can't even chamber a round! I'm not joking. It does run fine with a light 10mm factory load, 180 gr. at 1000 fps. The more I learn the more apparent see the enormity of knowledge to seek.
