I have my dad's old M17 8-3/8" S&W

I didn't like it when he bought it around 1980. Too stinking long, I had the 6" with three "T's". Dad got the plain 17, it was just his thinking. He did put Target stocks on that felt better to him. It's great for deliberate firing and target plinking but horrific to carry, usually a shoulder rig is needed. That's usually not convenient to me.

I'm kind of sad shooting it so I seldom do. The kids are not really interested in it, yet. I don't really want or need to sell it. Most research shows a fair market to be $750-800, stuff is high. One guy has them priced at $1695! I'm really wondering if he knows something I don't and should hold tight on it for sure. Being sentimental is so stupid and superficial but I've fought with it all my life. Doug is my inspiration, he throws everything aside for the new. My hero.

I bought a 6" barrel to screw on there and transition it to something I found more useful. But now I found a 4" barrel I'm considering. I'd REALLY like to find a "full lug" S&W factory barrel to screw on there and fit.

How rare is a 4" M17? I remember seeing the M48 in a 4" but not many 17's.
