you've stepped in a yellow jacket "hole" in the ground. I remember one time quail hunting along a fence row we "found" one. My friend threw his Sweet 16 browning straight up in the air, in a flailing display of broken English amid the colorful trail of purple shotgun shells, he hastily exited the vicinity with a cloud of wasps chasing him like an old cartoon. Incredibly he did not get stung a single time. Including the sneak back to retrieve jettisoned equipment.
Once while bush hogging I got stung directly atop my noggin. I was sporting a fresh flat-top crew cut and it was able to do his duty. One critically placed sting.
That night I could not find any sleeping position that did not pull on the irritated and sore skin. MY back, sides, or sleeping face down in the pillow, no avail. A very memorable and miserable night. Red Wasps (with black tails) hurt me for about 15 minutes then itch. The larger variety with orange tails and black wings will chase you all over! They are truly the devils children. Their sting is as aggressive as they are. I know of a guy who leaped from his dozer amid a swarm and he ran over himself and was fatally squished.
Keep your senses if you can and watch out! If you are allergic always take your meds hunting. Benadryl is always good to have on hand anyway.
