and the S&W model 29s were selling for 3 and 4 times retail, I had to have one. A guy in our town ran an ad for an 8" blued model 29 so I called him. I went by his house and looked at the gun. It was new in the box. Retail at the time was less than $150. The guy wanted $400 for it and I paid it. I always hated that gun as it reminded me that I was a dumb shit to pay that price. Shortly after that I started working part time at the local gun shop in the afternoons. I was still at the radio station and had the morning show so I was out of the station by noon or so. Anyway the gun shop got in one of the first 44 Auto Mags and I traded that $400 model 29 for a $269 Auto Mag and even though I gook a bath on that deal it felt good to be rid of the S&W Model 29. The Auto Mag became one of my favorite hunting guns after that.
