RACISM IN THE SOUTH

Jack Pender was a good friend of both Jim Taylor and I. He was redneck through and through and lived in Savanna Georgia. He was self-employed as an architect. I was visiting him sometime around 1990 and we were traveling around the city with the goal of going to the Crystal Beer Parlor for lunch. This was a black run restaurant and you had to go down an alley to enter the back door. All they served to eat was chili and hamburgers and both were the best you could get anywhere in the world. When you entered the door you were treated to a huge picture of Satchel Paige seated on a bench in the Indians dug out with his huge feet facing forward. This particular day our lunch was postponed as we ran into a black lady whose car had broken down. Jack, a redneck mind you, spent several hours chauffeuring this lady around town so she could get her chores done and make arrangements to fix her car. I don't know if all southern rednecks work this way but for Jack she was simply a woman in need. Jim and I love that old boy and both still miss him!
