Growing up my Dad did it. He made little tools to do one cartridge at a time. In the 1960's he shot a lot of .22 Shorts ... they were cheap .. and he would flatnose them to make better rabbit killers.
Later Paco Kelly and Ed Wosika took his tool and made hardened steel copies of it and sold it as the Small Game Bullet. SGB. They sold them up into the 1990's. Ed Wosika took the idea to RCBS but they said they could not produce the tool since it had been marketed previously.
Not too long later CCI came out with their flat-tip nose .22 bullet called..... Yep .. the Small Game Bullet.
Gary's tool which he developed independently of what Dad and Paco and Ed did carries the idea a bit further and is a much nicer tool. What Federal is doing copying Gary is just what happens many times in the shooting world.
I personally would rather have one of Gary's tools than pay a company for their brand of it .. because I like to make my own! If other people don't, that's fine.
It would be nice if someone from Federal said, "Hey Gary. Great idea! We appreciate it." Even if it was just a private phone call. I know Dad and Paco and Ed did not begrudge CCI doing it. It would have been nice if they just got a nod from someone, but they did not expect. I doubt Gary does either.
Like I said, I am sure people were doing this many many years ago. The Good Book says "there is nothing new under the sun" ...what is done has been done.
