If you notice they all have threaded muzzles too

I think it's mostly to combine with a suppressor and have an OAL less than 3'! A friend of mine had a Browning BAR in .300 Win. Mag. he stuck it in the mud while hunting and then shot it. The muzzle looked like something off cartoons. He had a Gunsmith cut it off to about 17" or so. We chrono'd it later and 180 gr. ammo mimic'd factory .308 Winchester in speed. He had the loudest .308 in the county!

If he still has it all he needs to do is thread the end and it's worth a mint. Supersonic suppressed is kind of nice too, minimal blast and it's not too loud with muffs.

A good 7mm-08 with a short barrel is hard to beat for an all round rifle. You can make it not too much over 5 lbs. and less than 3' long. It still beats the old 7x57 that killed about everything in Africa.
