I always struggle with my choices of CCW. Lots of times I just have a .380 thrown in my back pocket, not a good attitude. Even though I chose one with good actual sights and trigger, my accuracy past 15 yds is abysmal. Two chassis sizes bigger and I’m good at 25-30 yds. But even with my normal G19 size platforms (without optic) I’m shaky to 50 yds. Beyond that I’m not much good without a benchrest. Why my autos with a locking barrel are harder to shoot I cannot figure. Maybe I DO need to explore some of the optics of late.
For some reason a revolver really shines for me. It does not make sense as it has a fixed barrel and must mechanically align 5-6 holes up to shoot through. Not to mention six different chambers and throats. Yet given a little support, or even a good rest (and enough time) and I can hit a pie plate at 100 yds.! They are a big chunk to tote unless you really feel a need to gun up. I guess you should do that all the time anyway. If you carry be serious about. The once in a lifetime you are called to task you will only have a NAA .22 belt buckle rig and a Swiss army knife! Just my luck.
I have some good “serious” toting revolvers to choose from. A M66 4”, M686, and my coveted Reeder El Diablo .44 to name a few. I feel well prepared with any of these. The Reeder in particular may seem an odd choice, but it is an easy to hit with serous tool. On the medium chassis and big holes bored it is relatively lightweight, maybe less than the .357’s. Good sights and shootability over-shadow the capacity and reloading concerns. I would and have carried it on numerous occasions. I’ve even taken game and other animals with it. Because I had it on me and had total confidence. I’m always rethinking and trying to figure how to be more responsible and minimize my mistakes.
