He said first bullet placement was paramount, no matter, a bad shot with anything is just that. He also said you usually only get one shot. His personal defense rifle was a boat paddle M77 Ruger in .338 Winchester. The barrel had been cut back just a few inches for easier handling. He said the .338 seemed to have a telling effect, almost some shock effect, over a .375 H&H, .416, .458, whatever. That’s what he used. He didn’t carry a sidearm. Of his buddies that helped guide: .375 Ruger/4” 629, .375 H&H/ .454 Super RH, .300 Rem. UM/ .44 Mag. S&W (the sheep hunter). George’s deadpan storytelling horrified me on a daily basis. Tales of killers, both two and four legged! It was a memorable time.

Gus (a Y-O buddy in Anchorage, RIP) came to AK with a 7mm Rem. Rifle. After being on the ground with his first bear he said he went and bought a bigger rifle! I think he thought a good 12 ga. pump with quality slugs was good to have around. Once after killing a bear he said he had two friends with shotguns haze a bunch trying to encroach on them while they hurried to skin it out. They eat their own.
