He was a big fan of the .22 WMR and the HK semi-auto rifle as well. He shot lots of small antelope and monkeys etc. with it in Africa. But on a goof he emptied a couple magazines on a culling adventure just to see. All it did was piss old Dugga Boy off really bad. I'm not certain it could reliably penetrate the thick hide into the inner body cavity. I'd sure not bet my life on it.

I read of the Dutch Boers shooting Elephants in the knee-cap with smaller caliber rifles then taking their time to align up for a good brain shot. (Very, very, frowned upon but effective) I read an Elephant it totally anchored on only three legs, again I'd sure not bet my life on it. Plus old Dumbo likely has some considerable reach with that long nose appendage. I also read this DOES NOT work on African Buffalo. Conversely, American Bison are really hampered with legs taken out of action.
