It was fine with old BP speed stuff, I figure the .50-70 about the same. Same bullet weights, speeds, about same recoil.

Boy if you hotted it up it would bike you hard. I'm getting too old to enjoy that anymore. Overkill anyway.

Had I a .50/70 Govt. G2 I'd be happy with 350 gr. bullets and Trail Boss loads. Could kill anything on the planet, and has. In fact my .476 GNR Encore that's what I do.

Not given much thought to a Carbine version but I like all those little handy TC carbines.
