not know where to start to explain it to you. Pick a shotgun that fits you well regardless of the gauge. fit is key so the gun shoot's where you are looking. Choke can be mod thru full depending on the distance behind the trap. As George Digweed says " I like to shoot in front of them and let'um fly into it" a short phrase that sums up the entire sport of shotgunning.
Don't over think it Scott, just go have some fun with it. The soft focus idea is to hold the gun above the trap house and dont focus on any object, the first object you should see is the target appearing over the gun barrel. The reasoning behind this is to not have to break your focus and re-establish it on the target, takes too much time. when you reach the target shoot it, your first impression is usually the best one. dont aim, look at the target not the barrel. As a wise gentleman once told me, "If your looking at the barrel, you aint looking at the fucking target" hahaha his exact words
