it's an O-ring with all those little rubber rings. I used to grind a rivet flush and beat the pin out to achieve the links needed. Too easy to just cut a link in half with the Dremel and a cut off wheel, zzzzzzzip, you are done in 15 seconds what used to take 15-20 minutes of beating with a hammer and punch. Great risk of a purple thumbnail or bloodshed.

Purposeful destruction is quite pleasing with them.
