cut up steaks from the sheep and goat. In one of the pics you see a Ptarmigan hanging from one of the poles and the goat is lying in the foreground. He mentioned mixing up a pudding mix with water. But that is the only thing I remember him mentioning about freeze dried foods. This was in the early 60s so I doubt there was much in the way of freeze dried stuff. He mentions a couple of times that he used a 9 X 9 tarp, no mention of oil covered or any of that. And remember back then there were a lot of surplus Gvt stuff around like the mummy sleeping bag. It was probably the warmest bag made at the time. Maybe the only sleeping bag available at the time. He didn't consider himself a minimalist or ultralight hunter. He just carried what he absolutely had to have and lived off what he could shoot. That was 30 years before the "Ultralight" hunter became the thing for a hunter to be and be in style. If you asked him if he was a "minimalist" hunter he probably wouldn't have any idea what you were talking about. He talked about sleeping in old abandoned shacks to get out of the rain and snow and cleaning out and using some old pots and pans to make coffee and such. He didn't have all the useless gimmicks today's hunters feel they have to have to survive even an afternoon out in the weather. And for sure never wore camo. He made do with what he had. Too bad there aren't more like him these days.
