You need to ensure it stays put. Different metals expand and contract differently warming then cooling. I like the “rifle” Encore base for dual dovetails. It’s longer and placed more forward compared to the pistol specific base. Using long eye relief scopes it’s better for me to have more of the scope over the barrel than having the eyepiece hanging way out back. As you said lots of variations.
