A handheld Ham radio set up or at least a CB type radio could be your only link to news/weather if the Sh*t was too much for the fan or cellular system or power grid. Don't forget a method for changing the battery to operate it. Some Misfit might clarify but listening in with one and not necessarily "transmitting" would not require licensing with the FCC. I am not familiar with the ins and outs but I don't think I'd care much as long as I thought it could save my bacon.
