win mag, glass bedded and the barrel floated. Both calibers in my opinion are suited for most game I will ever encounter in the US short of the really big dangerous game. Both are capable in my opinion of taking plains game where ever you are. I would not shoot the .308 over 3-4 hundred yards on heavy game but have shot lighter objects at 800+ yards with the .308. I have also used the .300 win mag with 70 grains of H4350 under a 165 grain BTHP hornady bullet with a muzzle velocity chronographed at 3100 fps. It is extremely accurate out of my M77 and can easily hit light critters <300 lbs out to 1000 yards if you have the weapon dialed in with your eyes, scopes and shooting ability. I have not used the heavier bullets like the 180 grain or 220 grain as I would not use that gun for large bear or moose. (I still believe in slug shotgun for really dangerous game up close!) At 76 I still love my .300 win mag but use the .308 for most game as my longest shot will be 100 to 150 yards with most of them <75 yards. A .300 win mag at close range will turn the meat to jelly all around the entrance and exit holes and it just ruins too much to be practical for close range shooting for game you intend to eat like deer. Since I have never shot any plains game in Africa I am not sure what the wound characteristics are for large PG over 5 or 6 hundred pounds.
