Marlin discovered this a few years back. They advertised a Marlin model 1895 in 475 Linebaugh at the SHOT SHOW. They took quite a few orders for it. Then when they got back to the shop and talked to their chief gunsmith and he ran the numbers he informed them it wouldn't work. They tried everything but it wouldn't work at all. The cartridge was way too short to work thru the 1895 action. So they tried the 336 and 1894 action. That didn't work either as the wide rim of the 475 Linebaugh was too wide to go thru a mag tube and drop down into the action and then go thru the action without binding up. They ended up giving deposits back, which I thought showed how decent the folks at Marlin were.
Anyway, sometimes things that look like they will fly on paper won't even get off the ground when the trials begin.

This new cartridge at 1.8" may run into the same problem. It may be too short to go thru the 336 or 1895 action and too long to go thru the 1894 action. Like WB said above the rim thickness on a 30-30 case may cause them some problems too. These days the rim thicknesses of various cartridges are causing lots of problems. Cartridges like 45 Long Colt, 45-70, 348, 50 Alaskan among others are experiencing a lot of varying thicknesses on the rims. These cartridges among others were out long before ammo companies had to go by strict SAAMI specs and will vary a lot.
