and the first guy I ever saw do it was in an old 70's G&A magazine. Might have been that Spankingburger guy, not sure. Anyway taking a standard, easy to come by, .44 SBH cylinder that fits well and rechambering the .44 Mag. cylinder with a .44/40 reamer. I rented a "piloted" reamer what guarantees the concentric detail of the job. Has a throat diameter bushing spinny thing on the end. My .44/40 has .431" cylinder throats and shoots even undersized .427" lead Cowboy loads magnificently. I simply load .430" bullets in my reloads. So I call it a .43-40 Win., which was more correct anyway!
It did have a respectable constriction near the muzzle. It shot horribly. I'd read a bunch about that, but usually it's at the frame threads. I was not sure about what all those guys were harping about. Mine has been ported and I figure someone chucked it in a fixture too tight. I honed it mostly out, it is not completely out. But shoots fantastic now. I was working it and suddenly it started shooting great. The bore looks like chrome now too, so polished. There is something about bores having constrictions, and remedies, but at some point a slight constriction makes no difference. At least toward the muzzle end.
