Most of us old farts were raised by those who came through the Depression and/or WWII and Korea. Most everything was rationed or hard to find. Plus a lot of us came from farms and ranches where you just do not run to town every time you need a Kleenex.

Younger generations grew up with "convenience" stores on every corner and you just went and bought as you needed.
